1. Saudi Arabia adopts Digital India, equality of women in this year's Haj
Indian Haj mission in Saudi Arabia has adopted digital technology to reach out to a large number of pilgrims as part of the Government of India’s initiative of Digital India.
With Indian Haj Information System app, Indian diplomats in Saudi Arabia are trying to form a bridge with the pilgrims and also are receiving grievances and feedbacks to improve the service.The e-Masiha would retrieve pilgrims’ health information to apply appropriate treatment whenever he or she visits Indian medical facilities during Haj.Saudi Arabian mobile SIM card is being provided to pilgrims in India itself which can be activated in their buildings in Madinah and Makkah after recording their biometrics.This year, a total of 2 lakh Indian pilgrims are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia for Haj.
2. First Global Conference on Media Freedom in London
The first Global Conference on Media Freedom took place in London.
The UK government has committed 18 million pounds towards improving media freedom across the world.Also, the creation of a new Global Media Defence Fund was also announced at the conference.Indian delegation of Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash, Member of Parliament Swapan Das Gupta and Kanchan Gupta, Member, Press Council attended the conference.
3. Rajghat coal plant to be turned into a solar park
The Delhi Cabinet approved a proposal to shut down the Rajghat thermal power plant and to convert the area into a solar park with the capacity of 5,000 KW.
The government had closed down the coal-based plant in 2015 as it was a major source of pollution.The coal-based plant, having a power generation capacity of 135 MW and located at Yamuna bank, was commissioned in 1989.
4. Film Divisions to launch documentary film club in Mumbai
India Film Divisions launched ‘KSHITIJ’, a documentary film club in Mumbai.
An acclaimed documentary film “Secret Life of Frogs” by Ajay and Vijay Bedi will be screened as the inaugural film.The initiative, being launched in association with Indian Documentary Producer’s Association. It will give movie lovers, an opportunity to watch acclaimed documentary films and also to interact with the film’s director.
5. BCC signs MoU with BRICS chamber to promote trade
The Bharat Chamber of Commerce, (BCC) and the BRICS Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi, signed an MoU.
The MoU has been signed for promoting trade and investments between the BRICS countries and the eastern part of India.The MoU will enable both the BCC and the BRICS chamber to share trade-related information and exchange trade delegations among the five countries of the group.
6. Samsung joins hands with Paisabazaar.com to offer financial products
South Korean tech giant Samsung announced its partnership with Paisabazaar.com, an online marketplace for financial products in India.
Paisabazaar.com will now support Samsung Pay to provide users with a one-stop solution to their financial requirements.Users can apply for credit cards and personal loans from the platform.
7. Reebok signs Katrina Kaif as its new brand ambassador
Fitness brand Reebok has announced Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif as its new brand ambassador in India.

8. Vikas Swarup appointed Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs
Senior diplomat Vikas Swarup has been appointed as Secretary, (consular, passport, visa and Overseas Indian affairs) in the External Affairs Ministry.
His appointment will come into effect from August 1, 2019.Swarup, a 1986-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, is at present India's High Commissioner to Canada.
9. Lifter Ajay Singh wins gold at Commonwealth Championships
Indian weightlifter Ajay Singh has won Gold in 81 kg category at the Commonwealth Championships in Apia, city of Samoa.
22 year old also created a new Commonwealth record in the clean and jerk category by lifting more than double his body weight (190kg).He also smashed the national record in the same category. The other Indian in the 81kg category, Papul Changmai clinched the silver medal by lifting a total of 313kgs.P Anuradha lifted 221kg to grab the first place in the men's 87kg category, while Commonwealth gold medallist RV Rahul settled for the second spot by lifting 325kg in the 89kg event.
10. Former Bengal, Railways leg-spinner Soumendranath Kundu passes away
Former Bengal and Railways leg-spinner Soumendranath Kundu passed away.
Kundu took 127 wickets in 30 First Class matches between 1958-59 and 1968-69.This included 13 five-wicket hauls, including his personal best of eight for 104. He also took 10 wickets in a match thrice.Kundu was conferred the CAB Kartick Bose Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013-14.
