1. North Korea revises the constitution to make Kim Jong Un head of state

North Korea has revised its constitution to make Kim Jong Un head of state.

This amendment could help normalise the isolated country’s diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.Being head of state would make Kim a protocol equal to U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping in any summits and treaty talks.The change is the latest example of Kim’s efforts to establish North Korea a normal country.


2. The first train with 50 wagons of water reaches Chennai from Jolarpet in Vellore

The first train with fifty wagons of water reached Chennai from Jolarpet in Vellore district.

One more rake with fifty wagons has reached Jolarpet station for carrying more water to the metropolitan city. To overcome the scarcity of water due to the failure of monsoon for two successive years, alternate methods are being employed by the administration to meet the water needs in Chennai.The local bodies minister SP Velumani has said the supply from Jolarpet will be augmented to ten million litres a day and will continue for about six months.A sum of 66 crore rupees has been allocated for the special trains.


3. White Water Rafting Expedition flagged off on Indus River in Leh

Fire and Fury Corps Chief of Staff Major General Arvind Kapoor flagged off White Water Rafting Expedition on Indus River in Leh.

The Indian Army is celebrating 20th Anniversary of Operation Kargil with a series of events in the region. As part of Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations, a 210 Kilometer White Water Rafting Expedition is undertaken by the 27 member Parashu Brigade.The team will traverse from an altitude varying from 13,700 feet to 10,300 feet.The team has taken up this longest rafting with an aim of setting up a National Record with India Book of Records.


4. Kerala will host Women Startup Summit 2019

The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is hosting the Women Startup Summit on August 1.

The summit will be hosted in association with the Indian Women Network floated by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), at the Integrated Startup Complex, Kochi.Successful women leaders, startup founders, policy makers and women entrepreneurs will participate in the summit.The theme of this summit is ‘Developing an Inclusive Entrepreneurship Ecosystem’.


5. Chandigarh ranked among best performing states in education

Chandigarh has been ranked best among states and Union territories in the field of education and is followed by Kerala and Gujarat, according to HRD Ministry Performance Grading Index 2017-18.

As per the Performance Grading Index 2017-18, Arunachal Pradesh is the least performing state and has been ranked 36 on the index.According to the index, Kerala is the state with highest literacy rate followed by Lakshadweep and Mizoram.


6. West Bengal govt observes Save Water Day on 12 July

West Bengal government observed Save Water Day on 12 July.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the Day will be observed in the state each year from now to create awareness among people to check misuse of water.The Chief Minister directed Panchayat, Agriculture and Irrigation Departments to take steps for water conservation with an aim to save water and save the life.


7. Retail inflation increases marginally to 3.18 per cent in June

Retail inflation increased marginally to 3.18 per cent in June this year over the previous month, mainly due to the rise in food prices.

According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data released, the retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 3.05 per cent in May and 4.92 per cent in June last year.The retail inflation is on the rise since January this year. As per the CPI data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the food inflation was 2.17 per cent in June this year, up from 1.83 per cent in the preceding month.


8. India’s Anshula Kant named as World Bank MD and CFO

Anshula Kant, managing director of the State Bank Of India, has been appointed as managing director and chief financial officer of the World Bank.

As Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, Kant will be responsible for financial and risk management of the World Bank Group. As CFO of the SBI, Kant managed USD 38 billion of revenues and total assets of USD 500 billion.Kant is a graduate in Economic Honours from Lady Shri Ram College for Women and a Post-Graduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.
