1. World Youth Skills Day: 15 July
On July 15 every year, World Youth Skills Day is marked to promote youth skills development and abilities.
In 2019, UNESCO and the UNEVOC network will join the global celebrations to mark the day and also to raise awareness about the importance of youth skills development.Also, TikTok and National Skill Development Corporation have collaborated to celebrate the day this year by launching an in-app campaign ‘Skills4All’.This year, the theme for World Youth Skills Day 2019 is ‘Learning to learn for life and work’.
2. French National day: 14 July
The French national day, known as July 14th in France and Bastille Day abroad is celebrated every year on 14 July.
This year celebrates the 230th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris on 14 July 1789.Breaking of prison is known as a turning point in the French revolution that set the stage for the birth of the Republic.
3. ‘LaQshya’ to improve quality of care in the labour room, maternity Ots
The Union Government has launched “LaQshya” (Labour room Quality improvement Initiative) to improve the quality of care in the labour room and maternity operation theatres.
It’s a multipronged approach focused on Intrapartum and the immediate postpartum period.The initiative primarily focuses on reducing preventable maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity due to haemorrhage, retained placenta, preterm, preeclampsia and eclampsia, obstructed labour, puerperal sepsis, newborn asphyxia, and newborn sepsis.
4. IFFI's Golden Jubilee Edition to be held from Nov 20 till 28 in Goa
The Golden Jubilee Edition of International Film Festival of India, IFFI will be held from 20th Nov till 28th November 2019 in Panaji, Goa.
The business exhibition will showcase the latest technology, film production and distribution and other aspects regarding films. To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a separate exhibition will be held.President of Oscar Academy John Bailey and other eminent cinematographers and producers have been invited for the event.Russia will be IFFI partner in this edition.
5. Lewis Hamilton wins sixth British Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton made a thrilling victory in the Silverstone circuit to win his sixth British Grand Prix, his seventh victory in ten races in 2019.
Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas looked all set for victory, but a safety car intervention helped Hamilton to seal the victory.Bottas had an early lead from pole position and he fought off Hamilton's challenge in the starting laps.
6. England lifts ICC Cricket World Cup
England lifted their maiden ICC World Cup cricket trophy beating New Zealand in the final that was decided via a dramatic Super Over in London.
Opting to bat, New Zealand put up a modest 241 for eight. In reply, England ended at the same score leading to the one-over eliminator at the Lord's. In the Super Over, England batted first and the duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler made 15, and New Zealand also ended at the same score but for the loss of one wicket, paving the way for an English victory on boundary count. England's Ben Stokes is named player of the match. New Zealand's skipper Kane Williamson was adjudged player of the tournament for his excellent returns with the bat and inspiring leadership.
7. Djokovic beats Federer to win fifth Wimbledon title
In Tennis, Serbian Novak Djokovic won his fifth Wimbledon title after defeating Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12 in a match that lasted for more than four hours.
The match had to be decided in the fifth set, as both Federer and Djokovic won two sets each in the longest ever final to be played so far.This is Djokovic's 16th Grand Slam and 5th Wimbledon title.Women’s Singles: S. 8. Vinesh Phogat wins gold at Yasar Dogu International
India wrestler Vinesh Phogat has won gold in the 53kg category at Yasar Dogu International in Istanbul.
Phogat beat her Russian opponent Ekaterina Poleshchuk 9-5 in the final match to bag the gold medal. It was third gold in the women's competition for India after Seema (50kg) and Manju (59kg) triumphed in their respective categories.
9. Vijender Singh wins the 11th pro bout
Boxer Vijender Singh clinched a Technical Knockout over Mike Snider on his debut in the US professional circuit at Newark in the US.
The 33-year-old from Haryana prevailed in four rounds for his 11th consecutive victory in the circuit. This was Vijender's eighth knockout win in all.
10. Bangladesh's former military dictator Ershad passes away
Bangladesh's former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad died.
A former army chief, Ershad took over the state power in a bloodless coup in 1982 and subsequently ran the country for eight years until he was forced to quit.Despite being imprisoned subsequently on several charges, Ershad emerged as one of the most powerful political leaders in the 1990s after his Jatiya Party became the country's third biggest political outfit.
